Every September the conversation is about chips, cameras and battery life. Then the phone hits the shelf and people spend half an hour deciding one thing: which color.
This year that decision looks more interesting than usual. Everything coming out of Apple's supply chain points to one headline finish — internally referred to as Dark Cherry.
First, a clarification most articles skip
If you have read about “new iPhone 18 colors,” here is something worth getting straight. Apple has split this launch cycle in two:
- Fall 2026 — iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the first foldable iPhone
- Spring 2027 — the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and a possible second-generation iPhone Air
So the standard iPhone 18 is not arriving this autumn. Everything we know about colors right now applies to the Pro line. Colors for the base model have not leaked yet, because that cycle is still months out.
Dark Cherry: closer to wine than to red
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg was first to mention Dark Cherry back in February 2026. The story has firmed up since. April brought an internal Pantone reference of 6076, May brought dummy-unit photos from Sonny Dickson, and June brought a leaked SIM tray in the finish.
One detail worth knowing: two versions of the shade circulated online — a lighter, redder one and a deeper, more purple one. In August, leaker Fixed Focus Digital settled it in favour of the deeper shade, describing it as a purplish red closer to a cherry than to bright red. Picture something between wine and plum, depending on the light.
That is a real move for Apple. The last time the Pro line got a finish this expressive was Deep Purple on the iPhone 14 Pro — and it sold out first.
The other three colors

The finish on its way out is Cosmic Orange from the iPhone 17 Pro. Orange lasted one generation, which is the usual Apple pattern: one bold color a year, then rotate.
Design: less two-tone
Alongside the palette, one design detail leaked that changes how these colors read in person. On the iPhone 17 Pro there was a visible difference between the colored aluminium frame and the glass back panel. On the 18 Pro that difference should be noticeably less pronounced, so the device looks more like a single piece.
Sounds minor, but it has a practical effect: the color reads more clearly from a distance, and it is easier to match with an accessory.
What the color actually means for your setup
This is the part nobody writes, and it is the part that costs people money.
1. Buy Dark Cherry and you will probably want a clear case. Naturally — you paid for the color, you want to see it. The catch is that cheap clear TPU cases yellow within three to six months, and they show it fastest on dark devices where the discolouration is most visible. If you go clear, look for UV-stabilised material or a hybrid build with a hard PC back and a TPU bumper.
2. Dark finishes show everything. Dark Cherry and Dark Gray will pick up fingerprints far more than Silver. A matte case handles that better than a glossy one.
3. Light Blue is the hardest to match. Pastel shades vary between production batches and look different on every screen. If you are matching an accessory to the phone, order it after you have seen the device in person — or go neutral.
4. Do not buy an iPhone 17 Pro case. Current rumors point to a smaller Dynamic Island and a possible change to the Camera Control button. That means different cutouts. Cases do not carry over between generations, however similar the phones look from the outside.
5. Your charger and cable still work. Good news: USB-C stays. Everything you own carries over. If you are upgrading, use the moment to replace the cable that is already stretching at the connector — that is the single most common reason people blame a new phone for slow charging.
When we will know for sure
Apple's event is expected in September 2026, with the Pro models sharing the stage with the first foldable iPhone. Until then, however consistent the sources, all of the above is still rumor.
