Most people buy a charger by price, then wonder why the laptop charges slowly and the phone runs hot. Wattage is the one number that decides both — and almost nobody checks it before paying.
The short answer
Match the charger to the biggest thing you plug into it, not the smallest. A phone alone is happy at 20–25 W. A phone plus earbuds needs two ports and about 30–40 W. A laptop — or a laptop and a phone at the same time — starts at 45 W and is comfortable at 65 W. Buying above your bracket wastes money; buying below it means your device charges at the charger's speed, not its own.
Why most people get this wrong
Two mistakes, and they cost real money.
The first is assuming a charger's total wattage goes to one device. A 65 W three-port charger does not give 65 W to each port. It splits the budget: plug in a laptop alone and it takes the full 65 W, add a phone and the laptop drops to around 45 W while the phone takes 20 W. That is normal and it is fine — but it means a 45 W charger shared between two devices is doing the job of a 25 W one.
The second is trusting the number printed largest on the box. "Fast charging" is not a specification. What matters is whether the charger supports the protocol your phone speaks: Power Delivery (PD) for iPhone and most of Android, PPS on top of that for Samsung and Xiaomi, and enough headroom in watts to actually deliver it. A 20 W charger without PD will charge an iPhone at roughly the speed of the old 5 W brick.
And a third, less obvious one: cable. A 100 W charger with a 60 W cable is a 60 W setup. The cable is part of the system, and it is the cheapest part to get wrong.
The ladder, in plain numbers
Every wattage below is matched to what it actually does, not what it could theoretically do.
- 20–22.5 W — one phone, nothing else. Takes a modern phone from empty to roughly half in half an hour. This is the right bracket for a bedside charger or a second charger for the office. Anything less is a step backwards.
- 25 W — one phone, faster, and older cables still work. The bracket to pick if you have a Samsung or Xiaomi and want PPS, or if half your cables are still USB-A and you do not want to replace them yet.
- 30–40 W — phone plus a second small device. Phone and earbuds, or phone and a watch. Also the right bracket for an iPad. At 40 W you are into GaN territory, which means the same power in a noticeably smaller and cooler housing.
- 45–47 W — a light laptop, or a phone and tablet together. A MacBook Air or a thin Windows ultrabook charges properly here. Two USB-C ports at this level is the sweet spot for a one-charger travel bag.
- 65–67 W — the desk charger. Laptop at full speed with a phone and earbuds alongside it. This is the bracket that replaces three separate adapters, and the reason to buy it is not raw speed — it is owning one charger instead of three.
Above 67 W you are buying for a specific machine: a 14-inch MacBook Pro under load, or a gaming laptop. If you do not have one, the extra watts sit unused.

The one thing to remember
Buy for the biggest device you own, and count the ports you actually use at the same time. Those two answers put you in exactly one bracket — and once you are in the right bracket, the cheaper charger in it is almost always the right one.
